Driving through Texas on our way to the east coast one summer, we were mystified to see a Zebra on the side of the road. We had to stop the car when we saw a herd of Oryx’s grazing in the distance. We drove on in a weird state of questioning disbelief, until our next stop at a general store, where we saw a binder filled with color printouts of Texas hunters crouched over exotic prey. So we were only mildly stunned and actually somewhat bolstered when we passed a kangaroo rescue farm. At dusk we pulled into our campsite by a lake filled with standing dead trees, and slept next to a half-submerged forest of skeletal snags. When I got home, I put this imagery together with some photos I had taken at the ocean to create the feeling of that day. Some of my shots didn’t have the detail I wanted, so I had to bribe the kids with chocolate to balance on flower pots so I could reshoot.
